HISTORY

Bone inlay is a term used to describe an old decorative method that entails hand-carved, finely detailed pieces of bone being inserted into an object's surface. An eye-catching pattern of contrasting colors and textures is the outcome, frequently floral or geometric, and it adds surface beauty to any space.

Although the technique's beginnings are unknown, we do know that it has spanned continents, eras, and civilizations. Examples of this may be found in the adorned furniture of ancient Egypt, the lacquerware of eighteenth-century Japan, and the structures built during the Mughal Empire in India.

PROCESS AND CRAFT

At Khenshu, every resin and mother-of-pearl inlay piece is handcrafted in Rajasthan, taking 3–4 weeks to complete. The base is made of solid wood and high-grade MDF for strength and durability against humidity.

Each inlay is individually hand-cut and placed, forming intricate patterns unique to every piece. The resin is mixed by hand in any Pantone shade, poured to fill the motifs, then sanded, polished, and wax-sealed turning every creation into a true work of art.

The inlay work is crafted using natural materials such as mother-of-pearl, bone, semi-precious stones, and wood subtle variations are part of its handcrafted charm. Apply a light coat of clear wax or furniture polish once or twice a year to protect the wood and maintain its natural luster. Avoid dragging objects or placing heavy items directly on inlay surfaces to prevent scratches.
